What Is Scientific Research?

Scientific research is an organized process that aims to explore phenomena, solve problems, or verify scientific hypotheses. It is characterizedScientific researchby precise methodology and the repeated use of empirical evidence. Unlike personal or general research that may rely on subjective experience, scientific research relies on principles such as objectivity, repeated experimentation, and accuracy in data collection and analysis.

Basic Characteristics of Scientific Research:

  1. Objectivity: Scientific research requires the researcher to be neutral and unbiased in handling data.
  2. Organization: Scientific research is conducted in an organized manner according to a specific methodology.
  3. Empirical evidence: It relies on data collected from experiments and observation.

These characteristics make scientific research a powerful tool for achieving reliable and documented results.

Objectives of Scientific Research:

The main objectives of scientific research are to expand human knowledge and solve societal and scientific problems. Among the most important of these objectives are:

First: Expanding Knowledge:

  1. The primary objective of scientific research is to discover new knowledge.
  2. This knowledge includes new discoveries or challenging existing theories.

Second: Solving Societal Problems:

Scientific research helps address critical issues such as diseases, poverty, or climate change.

Third: Predicting Phenomena:

Scientific research can predict potential changes in various fields through the analysis of historical data.

Fourth: Control and Development:

  1. Scientific research provides tools and means that enable the development of new solutions or improvement of existing tools.
  2. The various objectives of scientific research make it the cornerstone of every technological or social development we see in the modern era.

Types of Scientific Research:

Scientific research can be classified into several types, based on the nature of the data used, research objectives, and the methodology followed. Among the main types:

1- Quantitative Research(quantitative Research):

It focuses on analyzing measurable and quantitative data using tools such as statistics. As for quantitative research methods (surveys, experiments, statistical analysis), such as: (studying the relationship between variables (such as the number of hours of sleep and students’ performance in exams).

2- Qualitative Research(qualitative Research):

It focuses on understanding complex phenomena through non-quantitative data such as texts or interviews, while the methods are: (case studies, interviews, focus groups). For example: analyzing participants’ experience in a new educational program.

3- Exploratory Research  (exploratory Research):

It aims to explore an unknown phenomenon or identify new areas for research. However, exploratory research methods (open-ended interviews, literature review). For example: exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education

4- Descriptive Research  (descriptive Research):

It aims to describe phenomena as they are without manipulating any factors. The methods (surveys, observation). For example: describing reading habits among university students

5- Explanatory Research  (explanatory Research):

Focuses on interpreting the causes and effects behind a specific phenomenon, while methods (experiments, causal analyses) such as (interpreting factors affecting unemployment rates in a specific country)

Basic Research Vs Applied Research:

  1. Basic Research focuses on developing theories and knowledge without seeking immediate practical applications
  2. Applied Research focuses on solving practical problems using scientific research

The Scientific Method: the Backbone of Research

The scientific method is a set of systematic steps that researchers follow to test their hypotheses and develop knowledge. The scientific method includes the following steps:

  1. Observation: Scientific research begins with observing phenomena or problems in the surrounding environment.
  2. Formulating a Hypothesis: The researcher proposes an initial explanation for the phenomenon they observe.
  3. Experimentation: The hypothesis is tested through experiments or field studies.
  4. Analysis of Results: The collected data is analyzed to determine whether it supports the hypothesis.
  5. Conclusion: The researcher draws conclusions based on the results, either supporting or rejecting the hypothesis.

Practical Example:

In biology: Scientists might observe that a certain type of plant grows faster in a particular soil, so they formulate a hypothesis about the cause (such as nutrients in the soil) and test it through experiments.

Research Ethics:

Ethics play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity and transparency of scientific research. Without researchers’ commitment to ethical standards, research can become misleading or harmful, and the fundamental ethical principles are:

  1. Informed Consent: Research participants must be fully aware of the nature of the research and any potential risks.
  2. Data Privacy and Protection: Researchers must protect participants’ data and ensure it is not leaked.
  3. Avoidance of Plagiarism and Falsification: Researchers are prohibited from copying others’ work or falsifying data to obtain desired results.

Contemporary Ethical Challenges:

Some ethical issues in modern scientific research include:

  1. Funding Bias: Some researchers tend to direct their results to align with funding sources.
  2. Predatory Journals: There are unreliable journals that publish research without proper peer review, which harms the quality of scientific research.

Importance of Literature Review

Literature review is the process of collecting and analyzing previous studies related to the research topic. It allows researchers to understand the field more deeply, identify gaps in current knowledge that can be addressed in their research.

How to Conduct an Effective Literature Review:

  1. Finding relevant sources: Using reliable academic databases such as Google Scholar or
  2. Analyzing key points: Focusing on the main theories and concepts in previous literature.
  3. Identifying knowledge gaps: Noting any aspects that have not been addressed in previous studies.
  4. Literature review is not just a review of references, but a vital part of research that helps shape the research question and establish the methodological foundation.

Scientific Research Methodologies:

Scientific research methodologies include:

  1. Quantitative methods: Used to collect and analyze numerical data, with important tools including surveys, experiments, statistical analysis, providing accurate and generalizable results.
  2. Qualitative methods: Focus on studying phenomena through non-numerical data such as texts or interviews, with important tools including open-ended interviews, focus groups, case studies, characterized by providing a deep understanding of social and human contexts.
  3. Mixed methods: Combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a more comprehensive picture of the research topic. Its main feature is enabling multi-dimensional analysis of phenomena.

The Role of Technology in Modern Scientific Research

With technological advancement, many digital tools have become essential parts of scientific research, such as:

  1. Academic databases provide easy access to millions of studies and scientific articles.
  2. Reference management software like Zotero or EndNote to facilitate organizing references.
